13. VEHICLE INSURANCE
TaT offers three types of accident insurance options. All vehicles have Public Indemnity Insurance with a maximized sum of NZD10,000,000. There is no excess for customers involved in this respect. The Hirer acknowledges that he/she has been informed about all insurance options prior to commencing the hire. The Hirer is liable for the insurance excess that applies to each insurance claim.
· For damages to any vehicle of Tourism and Travel Holdings Limited (PLEASE NOTE: this can be damage caused by the hirer or any third party) there is an excess of NZD5000.
· If the damage is caused by a third party, Tourism and Travel Holdings Limited will attempt to seek compensation from the third party or their insurance company and will reimburse the Hirer. This process does not always result in success unfortunately.
It is important to keep in mind that insurance is NOT COMPULSORY in New Zealand and there are a lot of uninsured vehicles out there.
To cover the excess the Hirer has three options:
The options are:
Option A:
Your liability is $5000 unless insurance is voided*. You provide a Bond of NZD5000 via Credit Card (debit cards are not able to be used for this). The Bond is “frozen” (preauthorized) on your Credit Card and is processed in the event of any incident. The Bond will be released after return of the vehicle and any other obligations are met (damages/any fines/Road User Charges for diesel vehicles are paid).
For all drivers under 25 years of age an additional NZD1,000 will apply as Driver Experience Excess Bond – see below).
A Windscreen and Tyre Insurance (1 front windshield, multiple windscreen chips and 2 tyres) can be purchased for an additional NZD7 per hire day (excludes service for changing a tyre). The Insurance Excess will be held as a bond on the Hirer’s nominated Credit Card for the duration of the hire. See Insurance Exclusions, clause 14.
Option B:
Reduces your liability to $2500 unless insurance is voided*. You provide a Bond of NZD2500 via Credit Card (debit cards are not able to be used for this). The Bond is “frozen” (preauthorized) on your Credit Card and is processed in the event of any incident. The Bond will be released after return of the vehicle and any other obligations are met (damages/any fines/Road User Charges for diesel vehicles are paid).
An additional NZD1,000 will apply for under 25 years of age Driver Experience Excess Bond – see below). A Windscreen and Tyres Insurance (1 front windshield, multiple windscreen chips and 2 tyres) can be purchased for additional NZD7 per hire day (excludes service for changing a tyre). The Insurance Excess will be held as a bond on the Hirer’s nominated Credit Card for the duration of the hire. See Insurance Exclusions, clause 14.
Option C:
Reduces your liability to Zero unless insurance is voided*. There will be no amount frozen on your Credit Card. Your credit card is held on file for fines/fees incurred. The costs for Option C insurance vary between vehicle type and age of youngest driver.
NZD1,000 Excess will apply for under 25 years of age Driver Experience Excess Bond – see below). The Windscreen and Tyre Insurance (1 front windshield, multiple windscreen chips and 2 tyres) is included (excludes service for changing a tyre). See Insurance Exclusions, clause 14.
*Breach of our rental terms and conditions can void/cancel your insurance. E.g. (but not limited to) – careless use of a motor vehicles, driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
Driver Experience Excess Bond (under 25 years of age):
The additional NZD1,000 excess bond held for drivers under 25 years of age for the listed vehicles:

The vehicle is insured for vehicle damages, third party vehicle damages and third-party property damage only. The liability excess applies to each claim, not rental. The liability excess is applicable regardless of who is at fault and the liability must be paid at the time the incident is reported, not at the completion of the rental. Where a third party is involved the vehicle excess bond will be refunded only if TaT is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the third party. Please note that third party claims can take many months to resolve.
